The Story of Pablo Escobar
Pablo Escobar, whose full name was Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria, was born on December 1, 1949, in Rionegro and died on December 2, 1993, in the Los Olivos neighborhood of Medellín, at the age of 44.
The son of Abel de Jesús Escobar and Hermilda Gaviria, he grew up in a working-class family. During his youth, he moved with his family to Envigado, where he began to get involved in criminal activities.
In his early days, he participated in petty crimes alongside his cousin Gustavo Gaviria, such as stealing gravestones and vehicles, and committing robberies. Over time, he moved into trafficking marijuana and later cocaine.
In 1974, he began consolidating his cocaine production and distribution network, giving rise to the powerful Medellín Cartel, with which he built one of the largest criminal empires in history and amassed one of the greatest fortunes in the world.
Thanks to his wealth, he sought to establish himself as a public figure, venturing into politics and funding social projects in vulnerable sectors of Medellín, such as the construction of housing and sports facilities.
However, his power also generated strong opposition. Figures like Guillermo Cano and Rodrigo Lara Bonilla denounced his activities, making them victims of the violence perpetrated by his organization.
During this period, Colombia experienced one of the most violent periods in its history, marked by attacks, narcoterrorism, and clashes with the state. This conflict left more than 46,000 victims, including leaders like Luis Carlos Galán and Carlos Pizarro León Gómez.
Escobar’s story serves today as a reminder of the impact of drug trafficking on the country and the importance of the social transformation that Medellín has undergone.
